SM East golf team earns second straight Sunflower League title; Wetzler earns First Team honors

Shawnee Mission East’s girls golf team on Wednesday wrapped up its second consecutive Sunflower League title, building momentum as they look to repeat as state 6A champions for the first time since 1979.

The team won the Olathe East Invitational at St. Andrews Golf Course Wednesday afternoon, which served as the third and final round of the Sunflower League Championship.

Sophie Wetzler had the lowest round of the day for the Lancers, shooting an 80 and taking second place overall. SM East’s Jessica Young and Alex Maday had scores that put them among the top ten finishers as well.

Wetzler also earned Sunflower League First Team honors. Young, Maday and Teagan Noblit made the Second Team list, and Annie Foster earn a league Honorable Mention.

Regional play for the Lancers will be next Monday, Oct. 14, at Heritage Golf Course. State play will be Monday, Oct. 21, at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City.

The Lancers took the state 6A title in 2012 for the first time since 1987.
