Say this about the 2013 Lancers football team: They have a flair for the dramatic, that’s for sure.
Trailing 22-15 in the fourth quarter, and with a golden scoring opportunity having just disappeared when the Lancers fumbled the ball on the Olathe North five yard line, SM East’s impressive defense stepped in and swung momentum sharply in the Lancers’ direction.
With the Eagles back on offense — but backed up against their own endzone — Lancer defensive tackle Dominique Atkinson chased down Olathe North’s Venus Tripplett in the endzone for the Lancer’s second safety of the night.
The Lancers got the ball back with the fourth quarter winding down, marched down the field and scored with just over a minute left in the game to take a 23-22 lead.
The defense continued its stifling play, forcing Olathe North to turn the ball over on downs with 30 seconds remaining.
And for the second week in a row, SM East pulled off some fourth quarter theatrics to keep them undefeated, and tied with Lawrence Free State for first place in the Sunflower League.
The Lancers take on 2-2 SM South next Friday — and then face Free State the following week.
Let’s keep that Lancer Magic rolling!
