SM North homecoming parade heads down Johnson Drive today

Today it’s SM North’s turn to celebrate with a parade. The annual homecoming parade will kick off from the high school at 2 p.m. this afternoon and move east down Johnson Drive .

smnorthThe parade will have 36 different entries and the floats will use the theme “Bright Lights, Big City” which ties in with the homecoming dance on Saturday night. The homecoming football game against Olathe East starts at 7 p.m. tonight. The marching band will perform its James Bond themed show prior to the game and the homecoming queen will be crowned at half time.

The SM North festivities kicked off Wednesday night with a bonfire and pep rally. The parade today will move down Johnson Drive to Lamar and then turn south on Lamar. A former principal and two retired teachers will be parade judges at the corner of Lamar and Johnson Drive.

Mission police say the westbound lanes of Johnson Drive will stay open during the parade, but eastbound will be closed. Lamar from Johnson Drive to 61st Street will be closed in both directions. Martway will be closed at Lamar for traffic in both directions. Streets are expected to open again at 3 p.m.
