NOTE: Tonight’s football game against Olathe Northwest has been bumped back to 7:30 p.m.
The Shawnee Mission East community’s big day has arrived — later in the year than usual, perhaps, but arrived nevertheless, and with a big football game on the docket to follow tonight.
Today at 2 p.m. the annual Lancer Day Parade will make its way down Mission Road from Shawnee Mission East to the Village Shops. If your primary interest in is motoring…avoid Mission Road from 75th Street to Tomahawk Road for 45 minutes or so. If your primary interest is in seeing some awesome floats, grab a spot along the parade route early! And maybe bring a tote to bag the copious candy and swag the passing high-schoolers will be foisting upon you!)
This year’s parade theme is “Lancers Around the World,” so expect a celebration of cultures. (Last year the theme was Disney. And the weather was crummy).
As usual, the parade culminates with a pep rally at the Village Shops, where Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer will issue his annual declaration renaming the city “Lancer Village” for a day, and school administrators and the football staff and team will whip the gathered masses into a frenzy for tonight’s home-opening game against Olathe Northwest. (It’s a “Blackout” game — if you need to buy a Blackout tee, look for the Lancer Gridiron Club tables at the pep rally).
Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Jim Hinson will be on hand as well, and will be making an appearance under the Village Shops clocktower following the pep rally as part of his community listening tour.
See you out there!
