With the opening of this year’s Musical Revue, it was already slated to be a memorable week for Shawnee Mission East theatre students.

But a surprise visit from Daily Show veteran and current Fox NFL Sunday contributor Rob Riggle made sure this week will be unforgettable.

Theatre teacher Brian Cappello said the school alerted students that they would have the opportunity to meet with a “surprise guest” after school Tuesday — but wouldn’t say who.

“He didn’t want a lot of publicity,” Cappello said.

But approximately 75 students showed up to find Riggle’s familiar face in the auditorium.

“He took questions from the kids about how he broke into show business and his experiences,” Cappello said. “He also gave advice that he received, about knowing what he wanted and did all he could to make his goal a reality. He also took questions about his favorite sketches and his favorite people to work with. Lots of great stuff.”

Riggle was in Kansas City for a charity event, and made the stop at SM East as a favor to two of Riggle’s Shawnee Mission South classmates, who now have a student involved with SM East theatre.
