11 Shawnee Mission East students make National Merit Semifinalist list

Eleven SM East seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists based in part on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2012.

The students are:

  • Alexander Armer
  • Justin Armer
  • Shao Borosha
  • Xiao Lu
  • Brian Philipps
  • Utsa Ramaswami
  • Henry Recker
  • Robert Simpson
  • Margaret Swartz
  • Ada Throckmorton, and
  • Kevin Xu

(You may recall Throckmorton’s name, as she happened to get a perfect score on the SATs — not too shabby).

The 11 students from SM East represent the largest crop of semifinalists since at least 2010. Twenty students across the Shawnee Mission district made the semifinalist list, including Shawnee Mission North’s Goldia Kiteck.

With the semifinalist distinction, these students have the opportunity to advance in competition for the $35 million pool of National Merit Scholarships next spring. Approximately 1.5 million students nationwide make the semifinalist list, representing less than 1 percent of high school seniors. Just 15,000 students will advance to the National Merit Finalist level from which the scholarship winners are selected.
