All Shawnee Mission schools went on lockdown this afternoon as a result of what is being called a “vague” threat received by the Overland Park Police Department.
The lockdown started at roughly 2 p.m. this afternoon, but students were allowed to leave for home at normal dismissal hours. High schools in Shawnee Mission dismiss at 2:40 p.m. All schools were asked to lock all external doors, keep students in at recess and restrict physical education classes to indoor activities. Classes continued as normal through dismissal.
SM East students were told the lockdown was over at approximately 2:38 p.m.
Athletic practices will be held inside this afternoon, according to the news alert issued by the school district.
