SM East’s boys soccer team opens its follow-up campaign to last year’s amazing season tonight against district rival SM West.

And this year’s squad has some big cleats to fill.

In 2012, a single goal separated the Lancers from the first trip to the state title game in school history. When the Lancers take to the pitch this evening, they’ll have just six returning varsity players. Last year’s team had 19 seniors, leaving less opportunity than usual for lower classmen to gain varsity-level experience.

The Lancer junior-varsity team game against SM West starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex, 95th and Nieman Road, with the varsity squads kicking off at 8 p.m.

This year’s varsity team will also be holding a scrimmage against Lancer alumni Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on the SM East field.
