Shawnee Mission East Blue/Black Scrimmage has new look with young club players, food trucks

The annual Shawnee Mission East football Blue/Black Scrimmage will have a new look this year.

As part of his efforts to get younger players in the area excited about the high school team, new coach Dustin Delaney has invited Football and Cheerleading Club of Johnson County players in fourth through eighth grades to run their own scrimmages at SM East prior to the high school teams taking the field. The cheerleaders in the FCCJC program will be cheering the FCCJC football players, as well.

The Lancer Gridiron Club has also organized to have food vendors on site – a pizza truck, taco truck and ice cream truck will all be on hand. (UPDATED: We had a reader ask who the vendors were: Little Italy Pizza, San Antonio Taqueria, and Frosty Treats).

“Coach would like to see families come with lawn chairs and picnic blankets to encircle the field and enjoy some Lancer football,” said Gridiron Club treasurer Jenny McDougall.

The good times begin at 5 p.m. with the FCCJC scrimmages. The Lancer squads will take the field at 6:45 p.m. The event is scheduled to run through 8:30 p.m.
