Shawnee Mission East’s traditional marker of the start of a new year – and a new football season – is coming later than usual in 2013.
SM East students typically make their spirited march down Mission Road atop floats the Friday afternoon before the first football game of the year. Last year, that day was the Friday before Labor Day. But this year two issues have factored in to this year’s parade being pushed back to Sept. 20.
For one: This year’s first game isn’t scheduled until next Friday, Sept. 6, when the new-look Lancers head north to Leavenworth for their season opener.
For another: Leavenworth is far away – which made the logistics of having the team participate in the parade and subsequent pep rally at the Village Shops and then get up to Leavenworth in time for the game nearly impossible.
Consequently, the school has bumped this year’s festivities to back to Sept. 20, before the Lancers’ first home game of the season…against former head coach Chip Sherman’s Olathe Northwest squad.
