KU Kickoff returns to Corinth Square for eighth year Friday

It’s the yearly August event that northeast Johnson County Jayhawks fans love — and K-State and Mizzou fans love to hate.

The eighth annual KU Kickoff pep rally takes flight this evening at 6 p.m. at Corinth Square, and will feature appearances by the always entertaining and eminently quotable head football coach Charlie Weis, women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson and track and field coach Stanley Redwine.

(Head basketball coach Bill Self was listed as a speaker on the announcement sent by the KU Alumni Association July 19 — but he is notably absent from the event listing the athletic department posted July 30. We’ll see if we can get confirmation about Self’s plans one way or the other and update this piece).

And if you want to hear the KU dignitaries fire up the crowd, get there early: Music by the band SELLOUT! is slated to start at 8 p.m., which means the speeches are likely to come fast and furious (unlike last year’s KU football offense…) starting just after 6 p.m.

UPDATED: Word is that Coach Self WILL be able to make it after all.
