Mild summer has fewer people — and dollars — flowing into Prairie Village pool

Traffic has been light at the Prairie Village pool this season on account of the weather.

For those of us who in May were petrified that we might be confined indoors for three months by a a repeat of the hottest-in-recorded-history summer of 2012, this year’s mild mid-year weather has been a welcome relief.

But the cool temperatures and frequent rainy days have been bad for business at local pools.

Prairie Village reports that, through July, municipal pool attendance is down 34 percent. Compared to the single weather-related closing they had in 2012 to this point in the season, there have been 15 this year.

And that means fewer dollars rolling in. Gate revenue is down from $139,462 last year to $101,762. And though pool membership revenues data won’t be complete until the end of the season, it’s on pace to come in around $20,000 less than last year.
