A giant oak branch in the front yard of a house on the south side of 71st Street near Roe Avenue broke loose of the truck overnight, falling atop electrical lines and shutting down power to homes in the neighborhood. KCP&L crews were on the scene before 7 a.m. working to restore power. The utility’s website indicated that approximately 30 homes were affected.

Viewed from the street, damage to the roof of the home did not appear to be particular significant.

(H/T to reader Kory Lewis for the heads up).

It isn’t the first time this summer that the area’s much loved mature trees have shed limbs. Reader M.F. Huntington sent in this picture of a tree that fell several weeks ago onto 72nd Street, where it barely missed hitting a car.

Anyone else had major tree limbs fall this summer (like we did during last summer’s drought)?
