Many of the same people who gathered in Prairie Village a month ago to hold a picnic protesting the city’s ban on openly carried weapons got together in Lenexa yesterday for a picnic with a different purpose: celebration.

Lenexa, along with Prairie Village and Leawood, was among the cities targeted with lawsuits by the Libertarian Party of Kansas for ordinances that prohibited open carry within their city limits. Though Prairie Village and Leawood have kept their ordinances on the books and are expecting further legal action against them, Lenexa’s city council voted last month to remove its open carry ban.

To commemorate that decision, the Libertarians got together Sunday at Lenexa’s Black Hoof Park with many of them openly carrying firearms on their hips.
