Mimi Fotopoulos isn’t the only Prairie Village-native tennis star making news this week.

Mary Weatherholt, who graduated from SM South, has wracked up a slew of honors for her senior season on the Nebraska Cornhuskers tennis squad.

Weatherholt this year advanced to the NCAA singles championship match and had a 30-2 record. She was named Nebraska’s female student athlete of the year, and won the Big Ten Medal of Honor. She also won the Huskers’ 2013 Heart & Soul Award, which honors a student for the development in life skills.

In addition, she was a nominee for this year’s Omaha World-Herald Fred Ware Award, which recognizes the top collegiate athlete playing in Nebraska each year. KC Royals outfielder Alex Gordon won the award in 2005.

Weatherholt actually completed her bachelor’s degree last year at age 20, and is enrolled in Business Administration graduate work at Nebraska.

Weatherholt’s brothers Rob and Will Simpson attend SM East.
