Roeland Park residents can participate in a town hall meeting about the city’s budget this Tuesday and learn about more opportunities to weigh in on different budget topics as it is developed this summer. The forum will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Drive.
The city describes the forum as a chance for residents to hear more about the challenges it faces as it puts together the next budget. One of the long-term finance problems facing Roeland Park is the predicted loss of Walmart sales tax when the Roe Avenue Walmart moves to the new Gateway development in Mission sometime in the next two years. The Walmart move and its effect on other businesses could cost Roeland Park up to $700,000 in lost revenue per year.
Roeland Park also is sponsoring a town hall on the Cedar Roe Library this week and its potential to close under the Johnson County Library’s long-term capital plan. That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center in Mission.
