After 15 years coaching track at SM North — 11 of them as head coach – Ryan Colburn has decided it’s time to cut back a bit. While he’ll still be the school’s cross country coach next year, Colburn says he wants to be able to spend more time with his young family in the springs, so is stepping down as track coach.
But if he had to choose a track season to go out on, 2013 was a good one.
SM North’s track program showed remarkable resilience this season after a 2012 effort that yielded few positives.
“Last year we didn’t have enough people to be competitive,” said Colburn. “This year we qualified 28 athletes for state.”
SM North took second place in both the men’s and women’s Regional meet earlier this month. And they put in a respectable showing at state last weekend at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium. The 4×800 relay team took the best time in Kansas into the state meet, and they finished sixth overall at the meet.
But the squad’s performance was topped by the sprinters. Senior Henry Bell won the 100 meters and took sixth in the 200. His senior teammate Caleb Denman took seventh in the 100.
