A Prairie Village resident has informed the city that a group called “Johnson County Open Carry” intends to hold an “open carry of holstered firearms picnic” at the Harmon Park Pavilion in June.

The event would ostensibly test Prairie Village’s ban on openly carried firearms within the city limits — a ban that a Johnson County judge upheld last month.

Grant Nelson, who lists himself as the vice president of Johnson County Open Carry, sent the city a short-term special use permit application Sunday requesting use of the pavilion June 16.

“We anticipate no effect [on the neighborhood],” Nelson wrote in the permit application. “We will have all media stations from the KC and surrounding areas in attendance.”

Prairie Village city administrator Quinn Bennion sent a message to the city council yesterday informing them that the Police Department would be contacting the group to discuss the intent of the event.
