Newsweek rankings name SM East fourth best high school in Kansas

The spring academic accolades season is in full swing, and SM East is again receiving high marks.

SM East again made Newsweek’s annual list of “America’s Best High Schools“. This year’s list put SM East at 650 in the nation. Last year, the list had the school ranked at 540th.

Last week, the Washington Post released its annual list of the nation’s Most Challenging High Schools, which included SM East and SM South.

SM East’s 2013 rankings made it the fourth best in the state, behind Blue Valley West (439), Blue Valley High (250), and Blue Valley North (567)

Every Shawnee Mission high school except SM North made the Newsweek list, which includes the top 2,000 school across the country.

The Newsweek rankings are based on six components: graduation rate, college acceptance rate, Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB)/Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores, and percent of students enrolled in at least on AP/IB/AICE course.
