Mainstreet Credit Union has completed a $50,000 gift to the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation to endow the Jack Chalender Legacy Fund.
Chalendar was a long-time educator, serving most of his 40 years in the Shawnee Mission School District before retiring as associate superintendent in 1983. He also served 37 years on the board of the Mainstreet Credit Union (formerly Credit Union of Johnson County) with 30 years as chairman.
The Jack Chalender Legacy Fund was started with and initial gift of $10,000 in 2011. An additional $40,000 given this month ensures it will continue to provide grants. The fund will award annual educator grants with a preference to middle school projects.
“It is an honor to pay tribute to Jack. He has meant so much to the Shawnee Mission School District and to Mainstreet,” said John Beverlin, Mainstreet CEO. “Jack played the role of teacher, counselor, boss, mentor and friend to many.”
Contributions honoring Dr. Chalender are accepted at the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation https://smef.org/s/1485/2_home.aspx. He now lives in Colorado near his daughter and grandchildren.
