A public reception for retiring Shawnee Mission School Superintendent Dr. Gene Johnson will be held May 21 in the SM West cafeteria, 8800 W. 85th St. The reception, sponsored by the district, run from 4 to 6 p.m.
Johnson has served 27 years in the Shawnee Mission district, the last five as superintendent. He will be succeeded July 1 by Jim Hinson, currently the superintendent of the Independence school district.
The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation has announced the formation of the Johnson Fund. Gifts to the fund will honor Dr. Johnson’s years of service and be used to provide scholarships for all-day kindergarten for lower income students and financial aid for other school related expenses for students K-12.
