SM East is one of the two Shawnee Mission high schools to make this year’s Washington Post “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list, which was released last week.
The list ranks schools using a formula that takes the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests administered at a school each year divided by the number of seniors who graduate.
SM East came in 944th overall. SM South was 1,680th. The list ranked more than 1,900 schools nationally.
The rankings place SM East as the third most challenging high school in Kansas, behind Sumner Academy and Blue Valley North. Blue Valley schools account for four of the eight Kansas schools to make the list this year.
Last year, SM East ranked 999th on the list.
