14-year-old charged in shooting of 6-year-old cousin in Mission

The building on Martway across from Sylvester Powell Community Center was the scene of the shooting at a chiropractor’s office.

The 14-year-old boy involved in the shooting of his cousin in a Mission chiropractor’s office this week has been charged with aggravated battery and as a juvenile in possession of a firearm, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s office.

He was still in custody in juvenile detention Thursday after the shooting which occurred Tuesday morning on Martway across from the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center. He dropped the gun in the office and fled, but was caught about an hour later just down the street.

Authorities now believe the shooting was accidental since he reportedly shot a hole in his pants and grazed his own leg when the handgun discharged. His six-year-old cousin was shot in the leg, but the wound was not life-threatening, authorities said. Other family members were in the office during the incident.
