A 6-year-old girl was shot in the leg Tuesday morning in a Mission chiropractor’s office just across the street from the Sylvester Powell, Jr., Community Center on Martway. The suspect in custody is related to the victim, police said.
Police captured a suspect just over an hour later only about a block farther east when he was seen exiting between two office buildings. He matched the description of the shooter perfectly, police said. Mission Police Captain David Moloy said officers had set up a perimeter and were searching for him when he was taken into custody without resistance. Dogs had been brought in to aid in the search.
Police said the suspect is a male juvenile and some news reports had his age at 14. The relationship to the victim is not known yet and police had not determined if the shooting was intentional or accidental, Capt. Moloy said.
The girl was shot at 11:05 a.m. She was talking when taken to the hospital with a single gunshot wound. She had been with family inside the office, according to police. The building is at 6025 Martway near the intersection with Beverly.
After the shooting, the suspect apparently dropped the gun, which was recovered inside the office on Martway.
