The Johnson Fund, which will honor retiring Shawnee Mission Superintendent Dr. Gene Johnson, will provide all-day kindergarten scholarships in the school district.
The new fund was announced by the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation, which will administer the fund. Gifts to the fund will help families “who can’t afford tuition and bridge the gap for children living at, or near, poverty level with school related expenses K-12.”
“Our students come to us from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds with varied life experiences. It is important to me for every student to have the resources needed to compete on a level playing field,” Johnson said.
Gifts to the special fund can be made online at www.smef.org or by sending a check payable to SMEF (Memo: Johnson Fund) at 7235 Antioch, Shawnee Mission, KS 66204.
Johnson will retire June 30 after 27 years in the Shawnee Mission district and the last five as superintendent.
