Shawnee Mission School Board expected to announce new superintendent tonight

The search for the next superintendent of the Shawnee Mission School District has ended. The board will make its appointment at tonight’s regular school board meeting.

The new superintendent will replace Dr. Gene Johnson, who is retiring at the end of this school year. After Johnson announced his retirement last year, the board hired Ray and Associates, an Iowa search firm, to help with the selection process. The firm held meetings for the public and constituent groups last year to identify the traits most desired in candidates for the job. The highest ranking trait was “someone who inspires trust, self-confidence and models high standards.”

Applications for the job were due in early February. Ray was to help the board reduce the list of candidates to a small number to bring in for interviews.

Johnson has spent 27 years as an educator in the Shawnee Mission district and has been superintendent since 2008.
