Prairie Village police have begun meeting with Shawnee Mission School District officials as part of a comprehensive school safety review in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings in December.
Police Chief Wes Jordan says he, along with two captains and two sergeants, are involved with the In Defense of Our Schools task force that is bringing law enforcement and school officials from throughout Johnson and Miami counties together to solidify best practices for school safety.
The task force has been divided into 11 teams assigned to examine current safety practices at area schools – both public and private. The idea is for the group to develop a “toolbox” of safety options that local schools and colleges can employ to secure their campuses.
Other organizations involved in the efforts include Olathe Public Schools, Blue Valley Schools, Johnson County Community College, the Overland Park Police Department, the Olathe Police Department, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. Leader anticipate completing the task force work this spring.
