Food on Friday: Hot Cocoa(nut)

Like most of Prairie Village, we’ve been snowed in. I’ve been relishing making snowmen and having indoor picnics – sometimes I can even get my daughters to join me. The truth is, it’s been a bit painful to watch how difficult it is for them to play in the snow. I grew up in Minnesota where kids learn to snowshoe as soon as they can walk. But Olivia finds sledding “scary” and snow “cold”. She usually walks around gingerly for a minute before heading back inside.

Needless to say, this will not stand. So I’ve been trying to entice Olivia to play in the snow by promising her hot chocolate when we’re finished. It seems to be working – I even got her to make a snow angel with me this morning. And for that, she got a very special mug of hot chocolate, made with coconut milk. The coconut milk adds such richness and depth of flavor that I’m not sure I’ll be able to go back to the standard version.

There’s no recipe for this — simply substitute coconut milk for regular milk when you prepare your favorite cocoa recipe. But don’t dilly dally! There’s snow to be played in, people!
