SM East grad lands spot in burgeoning LA boy band

2010 SM East graduate Drew McNamara made something of a name for himself in high school with his media production skills, winning the district’s Five-Minute Film Festival his junior and senior years.

Now, his other talents have him on the precipice of national fame.

After SM East, McNamara enrolled at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. But with two years in the classroom under his belt, he felt the urge to follow his passion for dance and entertainment. He asked his parents Jerry and Jean if he could take a break from school.

And shortly after he made the decision, McNamara was approached to audition for a spot in a new boy band being put together by Grammy award-winning producer Steve Russell, who has written and produced for Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown.

“Someone contacted him and said, ‘We like your look, we like how you dance. Can you sing?’ He said ‘Yes,'” Jean said. “That surprised me. I didn’t know he could sing.”

But sing he did — and convincingly enough that Russell made him an offer to become one of three members of I Am Him in July. Since then, the group has been working with Russell in the studio recording demo tracks, and released a YouTube video featuring the group covering Rihanna’s “Diamonds”:

At present, Russell is working to get the group in front of recording executives. If things go according to plan, they’ll be out with an album and touring in the near future.

Jean says the family has been taking the whirlwind few months in stride.

“He certainly has opened us up to a new world,” she said.
