Cozart and 3 Miege teammates commit to college football teams

Montel Cozart was all smiles Wednesday as he made his commitment to the Kansas Jayhawks official.

The University of Kansas officially landed its second premier quarterback from northeast Johnson County Wednesday when Montel Cozart of Bishop Miege joined SM East’s Jordan Darling in committing to Charlie Weis’s Jayhawks on National Signing Day.

Much of the credit for recruiting Cozart to KU goes to former Stags coach and retired Kansas City Chief Tim Grunhard, who joined Weis’s staff in Lawrence last season.

Cozart was one of four Miege football players to sign commitment letters Wednesday. Ryan Sinkler, Mitch Wille and Blake Schnieders all will play at Coffeyville Community College. The Miege Stags were the state’s Class 5A runners-up this year.

Cozart, who did not play football his freshman year, has started at quarterback the last two years and is first team all-state. Coach Jon Holmes read off his impressive statistics at the signing ceremony: 2,759 yards passing with 25 touchdowns this year; 626 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns this year; 5,207 career passing yards with 56 touchdown passes; 1,160 career rushing yards with 13 rushing touchdowns for his career.

Holmes said he expected the other three to move beyond Coffeyville in their collegiate careers. Sinkler and Wille were linemen and Schnieders was a receiver who also played defense.

Cozart was team captain this year. The Stags were 4A champions when the athletes were freshmen.
