Fritz, president of the Shawnee Mission chapter of the National Education Association (NEA), told the district that NEA expects more damaging legislation this session. She urged the board to “make a public show of opposition to the attack. This is not a time of neutrality.”
Fritz specifically spoke about House Bill 2085 introduced last week in the Kansas Legislature, which she said attacks collective bargaining rights. The NEA represents teachers in Shawnee Mission. The Kansas NEA site says the bill effectively eliminates collective bargaining for teachers by “giving every teacher the right to bargain” and then making “bargaining permissible for the school board.” The bill strikes the work “exclusive” from legislation regarding bargaining units.
Fritz and the KNEA says the Kansas School Board Association is expected to support the bill.
Fritz made the comments during open forum. There was no comment from the board during the meeting.
