Fairway sees glut of candidates file for City Council as deadline nears

A number of new candidates joined the races for northeast Johnson County city offices before filing closed Tuesday — and many of those were in Fairway.

Mayor Jerry Wiley is still running unopposed, but Fairway now has contests for each city council seat. The Fairway council races are:

  • First Ward: Chris Gigstad and Melanie Hepperly (incumbent)
  • Second Ward: Michael Staley and Ky Weekley (incumbent)
  • Third Ward: Jonathan Beaver and David Watkins [UPDATED 3:21 p.m.: Fairway informs us that Beaver officially withdrew his candidacy Tuesday prior to the deadline, so Watkins is running unopposed for the Third Ward seat]
  • Fourth Ward: Andy Duewel, Tanya Keys, Anthony J. Kimberly and Dawn Thibodeau

In Roeland Park, Linda Mau made it a three-way race for mayor with incumbent Adrienne Foster and Joel Marquardt. Mel Croston and Don Rau are both running for Third Ward council seat. In the Fourth Ward, Teresa Kelly, Carol Losey and Kristi Mellon. Sharon McNeil and Robert Myers Jr. remain unopposed in the First and Second Wards, respectively.

There were no late filers for Shawnee Mission School Board seats so only the at-large position is contested between Cindy Neighbor and Mark Read.

In Mission Woods, all of the governing body’s incumbents are running unopposed: Mayor Robert Tietze and councilors Charles Bachand, William Dunn, Cory Fisher, Mary Hunkeler and William Sanders.

In Westwood Hills, Paula Schwach filed for mayor and Christian Nafziger, Rosemary Podrebarac and Gailen Stockwell filed for council. All are unopposed.

There were no additional filings in Mission Hills.
