Kansas PE group names Highlands Elementary ‘Model School’

Highlands Elementary School is officially fit — so much so, in fact, that it’s being pointed to as a model for other schools in Kansas.

Highlands this fall received the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s (KAHPERD) Model School Award.

The honor recognizes the amount of time students spend in physical education class and with curriculum and other instructional practices. Highlands teacher Michelle Lawson accepted the award for the school, with KAHPERD representatives noted her creative approach to encouraging students and staff to get active.

SM North PE teacher Aaron Davidson was also recognized by KAHPERD, which named him Young Professional of the Year. Davidson has taught for six years at SM North, where he coaches basketball and cross country.
