SM East student council holding annual can drive through Nov. 16

Canned goods are a major part of the offering at the annual JCCB Holiday Shop.

The SM East student council’s annual can drive to benefit the Johnson County Christmas Bureau is under way.

Through Nov. 16, students will be collecting canned goods for JCCB’s annual Holiday Shop, where for a $5 fee families in need can come in and pick up food, children’s clothing, toys, books, coats and other personal items.

SM East students spur donations of canned goods each year through a variety of fundraising events, including a Bachelor Auction, leaf raking and raffles.

Each year, the school collects around 6,500 canned goods. It’s an essential part of JCCB’s ability to offer its Holiday Shop each year – and the need in Johnson County is growing. 2010 data shows nearly 36,000 Johnson County residents are below the federal poverty level. In 2011, JCCB assisted more than 12,700 people – an increase of several hundred from 2010.
