Prairie hosting showing of ‘Race to Nowhere’ Thursday

Prairie Elementary mom Meggan Prosser-Gebhardt sent in this note letting us know about a screening tonight of “Race to Nowhere,” a documentary about the effects of standardized testing on the education system:

Praire Elementary is hosting the event, thanks to the efforts of many parents concerned about the growing pressure students face to perform for standardized testing and college entrance exams/tests. This pressure to perform has produced harmful consequences in students, such as anxiety, depression, suicide, and cheating. Despite all of the hard work students put into high school, the film reports that many colleges find students ill-equipped for college because teachers themselves experience pressure to “teach to the test.” The film has been shown a few times in the Shawnee Mission School District throughout the year. We are privileged to have Dr. Barbara Bollier, who happened to see the film at SME last year, present her reaction to the film.

The film will be shown at Prairie Elementary School, 6642 Mission Road, tonight from 7-9 p.m. Click here for ticket registration.
