SM East soccer crowd treated to another standout performance on Senior Night

SM East cheerleaders held up cutouts of the senior soccer players’ heads.

Lancers seniors have fueled this season’s stellar soccer record — and last week, fans and family took time to show their thanks.

A huge crowd turned out for Thursday’s Senior Night game at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex against Olathe Northwest. Even without senior starting goalkeeper G.J. Melia, who is out one to three weeks with a separated shoulder suffered against SM South, the Lancers kept their strong defensive momentum, limiting Olathe Northwest to a single goal on the night.

The Lancers kept up their offensive intensity as well — though not in “mercy rule” fashion. Alas, Lancers fans had to settle for four goals, with two from Bryce McClanahan and one each from Clint Dunn and Tyler Rathbun.

After the 4-1 victory, all 19 seniors were presented on the filed with their parents and families (recently crowned Homecoming king Nick Kraske did the emceeing honors). Sporting KC players Kei Kamara and Cyprian Hendrick were on hand, as well as former KC Wizards player and Prairie Village resident Nick Garcia.

The win takes the Lancers to 11-1 on the season and 7-1 in the Sunflower League. SM East faces SM Northwest tonight.

The team celebrated after its second goal of the night.
