With blog, SM East junior focuses her passion for fashion

SM East junior Gaby Azorsky took her personal fashion journal and turned it into a popular blog.

SM East junior Gaby Azorsky says she literally can’t recall ever being interested in anything other than fashion.

“Nothing else has ever been as important to me,” she said. “It’s always been my passion.”

Still, when her dad encouraged her to think about turning the fashion journals she kept for herself — a daily recount of what she’d worn and notable fashion statements she’d spotted — she was a bit hesitant at first.

“These were just things I’d kept for myself as a reference,” she said. “But he said, ‘It doesn’t have to be public. Just try it and see what you think.'”

A year later, Azorsky’s fashion blog La Mode du Jour has attracted a dedicated following among her peers at school and KC fashion devotees. She aims to post around 20 times each month, documenting trending fashions as well as DIY fashion projects that she’s undertaken. Earlier this month she walked readers through the process she used to turn a vintage dress she got at a thrift store for $6 into something a little more “flirty,” in her words.

Azorsky, who is a fashion stylist intern at Birdies in Kansas City, Mo., and a member of the Nordstrom BP Fashion Board, has even attracted international attention from the blog. The editors of Boohoo.com, a British fashion retail site, contacted her about submitted a guest post to their site earlier this year.

Not surprisingly, Azorsky says she’s looking into fashion as a career.

“I’d love to work at a fashion magazine, or as a stylist,” she said. “The blog is just a way for me to keep track of the things I find that I love.”

Azorsky documents DIY fashion projects with photos and instructions on the site.
