SM East soccer wins KA-MO Tourney, takes 3-0 record into Sunflower League play

A good start to the 2012 season got even better for the SM East boys soccer team over the weekend.

The Lancers won the KA-MO Classic Tournament Saturday at the Blue Valley Activities Complex by defeating tournament host Blue Valley North 3-0. The Lancers earned their spot in the final with a 3-0 victory over Park Hill South on Thursday.

SM East came out strong in the first half, with senior Jackson Stephens scoring a quick goal just three minutes into play on a cross from senior Clint Dunn and a give-and-go move from junior Noah Eidemiller. Eidemiller factored into the Lancers’ second goal as well, heading a pass from Bryce McLanahan into the net in the 37th minute.

The Lancers led 2-0 at the half, but struggled offensively in the second period. Blue Valley North had the wind at their back, and used the advantage to put consistent pressure on the Lancers defense. But goalkeeper GJ Melia kept the Mustangs at bay, and completed his second complete game shutout of the season.

The Lancers scored a final goal on a penalty kick in the 67th minute, sealing the 3-0 victory.

SM East opens Sunflower League play tomorrow against Olathe East at the Shawnee Mission Soccer complex. Game time is 7 p.m.
