Scenes from a soggy Lancer Day Parade

Drenched Lancers fans gathered at the Village Shops for the annual pep rally prior to the first football game of the season.

Steady rains may have kept away the traditionally large contingent of spectators, but what Friday’s annual Lancer Day Parade lacked in crowd size it made up for in enthusiasm.

Working with a Disney theme, more than a dozen SM East sports teams, music groups and other organizations marched down Mission Road on floats and in costumes, enduring soggier and soggier conditions on their way to the Village Shops. The thinner-than-usual crowd was a boon to the little Lancer fans who braved the elements: They benefited from a favorable candy-to-spectator ratio.

At the Village Shops, hundreds of students and supporters gathered around the clocktower for the football pep rally, where Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer read his yearly proclamation renaming Prairie Village “Lancer Village” for one day.
