SM East football teams have public tune-up prior to this week’s season openers

Coach Chip Sherman addressed the varsity team before they took the field Friday for their scrimmage.

The SM East junior parking lot was full of tailgaters. The bleachers were packed with parents and students. And the air was full of anticipation as the countdown to the Lancers’ football season-opener entered its final week.

The Lancer faithful got their first good look at the 2012 football teams Friday during the annual Black and Blue Scrimmages. As is traditional, the freshman and sophomore squads took to the field first, followed by the varsity team.

Quarterback Jordan Darling, who sported a Kansas Jayhawks towel in his waistband, showed off the arm that landed him an offer letter from Charlie Weis and the University of Kansas for the 2013 season. Senior Patrick Blackburn took a number of handoffs from Darling, and is anticipated to handle the bulk of the running back duties in the absence of graduated seniors Adam Lowe, Jake Libeer and Jeff Cole.

The Lancers varsity team opens its 2012 campaign this Friday, Aug. 31 against SM South. The game starts at 7 p.m. at SM North stadium. The traditional Lancer Day Parade will makes its way down Mission Road at 2 p.m. — see you all there!
