Food on Friday: Babies put the freeze on my desire to cook

Stouffer’s frozen lasagna: The breakfast of champions. Or at least of new (again) parents with nothing else in the fridge.

By Julia Westhoff

I realize that we are now in the heart of summer harvest, and that no one in their right mind is reaching for frozen foods to heat up in the microwave. But you see, I am not in my right mind. I have a new baby, a toddler, and absolutely zero desire to get near the stove. Instead, we’ve stocked up on items commonly found in the freezer aisle of the grocery store, and it’s actually been kind of fun trying them out! I’ve already dished in this column on my weakness for Banquet Chicken Pot Pies (with cottage cheese mixed in). For 85 cents I defy you to find a more satisfying meal. And after college I think Jay lived on El Monterey Frozen Burritos for a few years.  But I don’t think we’re alone in these indulgences. I was talking to someone the other day, a real foodie, who admitted his weakness for Stouffer’s French Bread Pizza. Below is a list of some of our other old favorites. But I was wondering – does anyone else have good frozen food recommendations? Any guilty pleasures? Do share!

  • Totino’s Pizza Rolls (I know someone who uses these as a topping on his frozen pizzas!)(Editor’s note: It’s not me).
  • Stouffer’s Lasagna
  • Annie Chun’s Dumplings
  • Eggo Waffles (with just butter – my favorite midnight snack)
  • Pillsbury Toaster Strudel
