Two local elementaries were among the Shawnee Mission schools recognized this month for ahead-of-the-curve efforts to reduce waste and conserve resources in Johnson County.
The Johnson County Board of Commissioners named Briarwood, Brookwood and Tomahawk to its list of Green Business Award winners.
Brookwood received a Gold Level honor for its program composting cafeteria waste and teaching kids about how to conserve resources. School officials say the program has led to 22.5 tons of organic compost and 40 tons of recycled paper, cardboard, plastics and cans.
Briarwood won an Honorable Mention award for its food composting efforts as well as an initiative to get other schools to compost.
Brookwood, Briarwood and Tomahawk were the only three schools among the 13 winners, who were recognized at the July 19 Board of Commissioners meeting.
