Here’s a guess: the US Postal Service hasn’t heard the end of grumbling from local residents about changes to their mail service. In fact, a fresh wave may be just about to begin.
In an apparent departure from assurances Postal Service representatives made during a well-attended community meeting in January, the Postal Service has announced it is considering three locations outside the Prairie Village city limits as a possible replacement location for the retail facility at 3710 W. 73rd Terr.
Postal Service Real Estate Specialist Garry Mattox sent a letter to Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer last week informing him that the agency was looking at six locations for a new retail operation, three of which are in Overland Park.
The contending addresses provided by the Postal Service are:
- W 71st & Mission, Prairie Village (Village Shops)
- 7208-7262 W 75th St – Overland Park Retail (strip center West of Metcalf/75th)
- 7311-7331 W 79th St – Overland Park Retail (strip center in downtown OP)
- 7301-7319 W 80th St – Overland Park Retail (strip center in downtown OP)
- 3901-3975 W 83rd St – Prairie Village Retail (Corinth Shops South)
- 4050 W 83rd St – Prairie Village Retail (Corinth Shops – Hen House address)
In a note to Prairie Village city councilors Tuesday morning, City Administrator Quinn Bennion noted that the possibility of moving the facility to an Overland Park address ran counter to the information provided at the January meeting:
“The information is not the same as previously provided by Mr. Mattox of the USPS,” Bennion wrote. “At the public meeting in January 2012 at the PV Post Office, attended by close to a 100 people, Mr. Mattox assured all of us in attendance that if the post office moves, it will be to a location as close as possible to the current location. He stated that it would remain somewhere in Prairie Village.”
