Parents getting traffic lesson during first week of school at Indian Hills

Prairie Village police are hoping parents take the time to learn some new material this first week of school: how to drop off their children at Indian Hills and SM East.

Because of the increased student population at Indian Hills on account of the merger with Mission Valley, police and the district devised a new set of parking rules for the school. Student pick up and drop off is to take place only in the parking lot on the southwest side of the school off Delmar, which can be accessed from either 63rd Street or Mission Road. Parents are not permitted to use the front circle drive between the hours of 8:30-8:45 a.m. and 3:30 and 3:45 p.m.

At SM East, the police are reiterating that parents and students cannot stop or park along Mission Road, and that left turns are prohibited when exiting the parking lot along Mission Road.

Police Chief Wes Jordan said the department would be handing out literature detailing the parking rules and educating parents this week, but that next week police would begin issuing citations for violations.

“It’s important to everyone’s safety that these rules get followed, so we will be enforcing them strictly,” he said.
