According to the Kansas City Star, Steven Bradford, 18, told a Wyandotte County Judge yesterday that Reed, who is charged with aiding a felon and criminal possession of a firearm, was upset at having been teased by the Roeland Park Skaters, a group with which murder victim Ryder Spillman was associated.
But it was Shane’s cousin, Stephen Reed, who was charged with first-degree murder for pulling the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver that shot Spillman through the heart.
During the hearing, Thomas Retherford, 16, told the judge he was in the truck from which Stephen Reed shot Spillman, and didn’t think Reed was aiming at the victim.
“Just by the way he was not looking right at him, I don’t think he was trying to hit him,” Retherford said.
Judge Wes Griffin will rule on whether the two teens should be tried as adults at the end of the hearing.
