Win Friday earns Lancers playing time on championship day at state baseball tourney

The Lancers are living large in Lawrence.

A 2-0 victory over Wichita Northwest in the opening round of the 6A state baseball tournament Friday guarantees the Lancers will play in two games today. Win the first against un-defeated Maize this morning, and the Lancers will be playing for the state title this afternoon. Lose, and they’ll make their way to the consolation game.

Starting pitcher Brennan Burns threw a four hit shutout over seven innings. Dylan Becker and Billy Kirkpatrick had RBI hits that secured the game for the Lancers.

Coach Jerrod Ryherd said Friday night he hadn’t decided who would pitch for the Lancers during the first game Saturday, but Burns would be available to pitch another three innings.
