KC Star endorses Leavens in Shawnee Mission School Board race

The Kansas City Star editorial board on Monday endorsed at-large candidate Joan Leavens for the Shawnee Mission School Board.

The editorial board called her the “top choice in an exceptionally talented field that also includes Bart Altenbernd of Prairie Village, a former teacher and school administer and now school paraprofessional, and John St. Clair Jr., a former mayor of Fairway.”

Leavens won the plurality of the primary election for the seat, taking 35 percent of the vote.

In the race for the SM North area seat vacated by Susan Metsker, the Star endorsed Sara Goodburn. The Star also endorsed incumbents Patty Mach, who represents the SM Northwest area, and Deb Zila, the current board president who represents the SM South area.
