Beachy named SM East Chick-Fil-A Teacher of the Year

Three cows holding signs reading “TEECH MOR ENGLISH” walked into SM East teacher Laura Beachy’s classroom last week. Metaphorically speaking, at least.

Beachy, who teaches freshman honors and senior International Baccalaureate English classes, has been named the school’s Chick-Fil-A Teacher of the Year.

Beachy said she was shocked when she got word of the award.

“There are many other teachers who deserve this award,” she said.

An English department veteran of 11 years, Beachy said her approach to teaching is to empathize with her students.

“I often try to put myself in the students’ shoes,” she said. “In all seriousness, that’s a scary place to be sometimes. I tell students frequently that I do not know many adults who could handle being a teenager today. It’s downright difficult.”

Beachy will attend a ceremony in May honoring all the Shawnee Mission School District teachers who won (each school in the district had a winning teacher). And, of course, she gets a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich every week for a year.

“I thought they were kidding (about the sandwich part),” Beachy said. “But I understand that to be true now.”
