With home loss in substate opener, Lancers girls’ season comes to an unexpected end

The scenario that played out in the Lancers boys basketball team’s favor on Wednesday caught the girls off-guard on Thursday.

Heavily favored going into the opening game of substate play against 6-14 Blue Valley Northwest, the Lancers couldn’t get things to click, losing 47-37. The loss brings their season to a close.

On the bright side, many of the players who helped propel the team to the top seeding in its bracket for the substate tournament are returning next year. The team finished 12-9 this season under first year head coach Scott Stein.

The boys will try to add another unlikely extension to their season tonight against 8-13 Blue Valley West, which upset SM Northwest 40-38 Wednesday to move into the substate finals. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. at SM West.
