“Your word is ‘champion'”
“Champion. Could you use it in sentence?”
“Mission Valley seventh grader Anna Molteni is the champion of the Johnson County Spelling Bee.”
Well — co-champion, technically.
Molteni tied with Zach Winterman, a seventh grader at St. Michael the Archangel, in the county’s spelling bee last weekend, earning her a spot at the state bee in March, and a chance to compete for the honor of representing Kansas at the national bee in June. Molteni and Winterman beat out 85 other students to make it down to the final two. Bee organizers had to declare a tie after they ran out of official spelling words.
Eight students in total from Johnson County won the chance to compete at the state level during Saturday’s bee, including two more from area schools: Celia Hack, Highlands Elementary, and Yashi Wang, Westwood View Elementary.
